Honolulu Biennial Foundation (HBF) recently announced that for the sophomore debut of Honolulu Biennial, a non-profit, contemporary arts festival, the co-title sponsors will be: The Howard Hughes Corporation and The Taiji and Naoko Terasaki Family Foundation.
“We are honored and delighted that two of our trailblazing partners who made Honolulu Biennial so successful in 2017 have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting and celebrating the arts, cultures and the communities linked by the Pacific Ocean through the generous, co-title sponsorship from our Founding Title Sponsor, The Howard Hughes Corporation and The Taiji and Naoko Terasaki Family Foundation,” says Katherine Tuider, Executive Director of HBF.
HBF shares that this sponsorship will directly go to support new commissions by contemporary artists from Hawaiʻi and the cultures linked by the Pacific Ocean; educational initiatives and outreach; and logistical support that makes this two-month long, multi-venue, public arts festival possible. The second iteration of Honolulu Biennial will run from March 8 – May 5, 2019 and is curated by Nina Tonga and Scott Lawrimore, with Josh Tengan serving as assistant curator.
“As we continue to develop a vibrant local community at Ward Village, we celebrate the ability of art and culture to transcend boundaries and bring people of all ages and backgrounds together, as was exemplified in the tremendous success of the first Honolulu Biennial,” said Simon Treacy, President, Hawaii at The Howard Hughes Corporation.
“Building upon the amazing success of the Honolulu Biennial in 2017, we look forward to supporting the second edition of this dynamic arts festival in 2019, which will once again feature Ward Village as its hub, and continuing our efforts with their entire team,” added Todd Apo, Vice President of Community Development at The Howard Hughes Corporation.
“The Taiji and Naoko Terasaki Family Foundation is delighted to expand our support of HBF as one of the co-title sponsors for the next edition. We believe that the arts improve the quality of life for the people of Hawaiʻi and through the platform of the Honolulu Biennial, propels Hawaiʻi as central for creative discourse globally,” shares Taiji Terasaki.
Honolulu Biennial debuted in 2017, welcoming nearly 100,000 visitors across nine exhibition sites and had an economic impact of $35.7 million. The first edition of Honolulu Biennial garnered many notable accolades, including being a finalist in the “Best Event or Festival of the Year” category for the PBN Pineapple Awards and receiving critical acclaim, including being recognized as one of the “top art events to attend” by Vanity Fair UK and The Today Show, amongst other media outlets.
