IBA Stage: Manuela Moscoso

The inaugural event of IBA Stage, our latest addition to IBA’s public programming, is quickly approaching and we are delighted to start this new program with one of IBA’s oldest members: Liverpool Biennial.

Today we’re taking a little time to present to you Manuela Moscoso, curator of The Stomach and The Port, Liverpool Biennial’s 2021 exhibition which took place earlier this year between the months of March and June (after being originally planned for July 2020).

She presents the exhibition as a reflection on questions like: what is a body? What does it mean to be human, and what could humans be to one another? With the title suggesting an idea of interdependency between living organisms, our environment and history.  The direct link to the port thus, in the specific context of Liverpool, opens up both towards the exchange function of this prominent infrastructure between the city and the world, and to its history linked to slave trade and colonial structures.

Manuela Moscoso was the Curator of Liverpool Biennial 2021: The Stomach and the Port, and before that was Senior Curator at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City. Previously, she was the Associate Curator of the Bienal de Cuenca 12, Ecuador and the Co-Director of Capacete, a residency programme based in Brazil where she also ran the curatorial programme, Typewriter. She is the co-founder of Zarigüeya, a programme that activates relationships between contemporary art and the pre-Columbian collection of the Museo Casa del Alabado, Ecuador.
