IBA Stage: Triennale Brugge 2024
June 12, 2024 (Wednesday)
3:00 pm (Brugge/GMT+2)
The team of Triennale Brugge 2024 will join us to present, as part of our IBA Stage program, their project for their current edition Spaces of Possibilities which will run til September 1st 2024. We hope this talk will inspire many of you to visit Brugge before the end of this inspiring exhibition and participate in some of the public programs connected with it.
One of the key thoughts around which the fourth edition of the Triennial Brugge has been developed is how to approach sustainability and change in a city largely put under the heritage protection of UNESCO. The curatorial team, composed of Shendy Gardin and Sevie Tsampalla and coordinated by Artistic Coordinator Alan Quireyns developed an exhibition, largely in the city’s public space, to explore the city’s latent potential in offering a lively and livable city beyond its UNESCO status and importance. The curators in the description of their approach render the struggle of balancing these two aspects very clear thus raising important critical questions as to how we go about sites which we recognize as historically relevant and yet we need to keep alive for this to continue to be the case.
The exhibition project consisted in twelve international artists, working only in the public realm, another element making Triennale Brugge stand out, which, in the words of the curators:
“…show new forms of use, connect city districts and bring people and nature back together. They critically relate to the past, the rich heritage, the parkland and the urban environment and create new social, societal and ecological narratives that transcend the dominant paradigms. Spaces of Possibility questions the assumption that things are as they are and suggests that they could be otherwise. It forms a constant bridge between the local context and broader, collective thinking about the city and its potential future, where transformation is not the end goal, but a means that enables mental or spatial change through the transformative power of art and architecture.
It establishes Bruges as a shared terrain for imagination, wonder and encounter and invites the public to discover the city from new horizons. In so doing, we are continuing Bruges Triennial’s mission as a platform for experimentation in 2024. We hope that it will continue to inspire, generate support and launch ideas for the future. An exercise in imagination; a glimpse of what Bruges, and cities in general, can be, today and in the future: Spaces of Possibility.
To have the possibility to hear and discuss with the individuals behind biennials has been a key component of what we believe IBA can offer to our members and the wider public and we value your participation through our live streams. As always IBA Stage events are meant as a moment to hear about a project through its makers and have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.
