The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Municipal Government of La Paz and Cultural Vision Foundation are organizing the IX International Biennial of Art, SIART-Bolivia 2016, to be held from October 10 to November 11, 2016, in the city of La Paz – Bolivia. The SIART Biennial is a space of promotion, diffusion, reflection and integration through contemporary art, which presents Bolivia with current artistic processes taking place in the world; it motivates artistic production and generates dynamic art in its different expressions. It will consist of exhibitions, international competition, and meetings of reflection on art and educational activities, which fully meet the curatorial offering. Eight versions of the SIART Biennial, over the course of 17 years, merit a space and moments of reflection that will generate artistic thought from our own contemporaneity in this 9th version. To this end, the Biennial will reach out beyond the city of La Paz, developing specific curatorial projects in the cities of El Alto, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba.

“Seeing with the ears – Poetics of temporality” enlivens what comes from the primeval darkness of our being. The word emerges precisely in this place of light and shadow, appearances and realities. The word, as verse of rain or a hummingbird’s song is a universe that feels through a thought. The ritual gives meaning to the word and lets us imagine the narrative. The art of living is the art of becoming word through the ritual. That rite that takes us from one state to another, the material to a spiritual world that escapes any corporeal world element. If time is a mental state and not a condition that condemns the body, Seeing with the Ears is to look from this other place. It is an invitation to inhabit time crystals within time, confronting simultaneities and other forms of temporality. Seeing with the Ears is to take a look inside and redefine ourselves from the particular characteristics of the cultural fabric of belonging. This implies listening to the simultaneous temporalities submerged in historical strata and producing contemporary art that responds to our questions and explores the different moments existing in time.

Three central themes guide the path of the IX SIART Biennial:

1. BODY: marked skin, differences
2. COMMUNITIES: displacements, beyond the landscape
3. WRITE AND REWRITE: moments and memories
