The Florence Biennale, independent and self-financed contemporary art exhibition, has come to its 10th Edition and will be held in the heart of Florence (Italy), at the Fortezza da Basso, from October 17 to 25, 2015.
Over the last twenty years the Florence Biennale has become a showcase of excellence and a reference model in the contemporary art scene as offering to artists from all over the world an outstanding experience of cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary dialogue.
“Art and the Polis”, is the theme proposed for the 10th edition by the Artistic Director, Rolando Bellini. The myth of the ideal city inherited from classical antiquity revived: the polis (ancient Greek city-state) should be interpreted not only as environment, but also as a microcosm with balanced interrelation between Man and Nature. And, not least, as a privileged scene in which, every two years, the Fortezza da Basso becomes the ‘city of the artists,’ thus an ideal contemporary city where talents from across the world give lustre to Florence. Debuting artists, emerging artist, and established artist, all committed to experimenting forms, materials and techniques with increasingly raised awareness.
The 10th edition of the Florence Biennale will be held concurrently with the 150th anniversary of Florence as capital of Italy, and the EXPO 2015. We are working to make the 10th Florence Biennale a unique event as well as the celebration of twenty years of our history. The program, collateral events, and news will be disclosed in the forthcoming months.
Internationally renowned artists will be guests of honor, as happened in previous editions with David Hockey, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Richard Anuskiewicz, Gilbert & George, Marina Abramović, Shu Yong, José Luis Cuevas, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, and Anish Kapoor, who were awarded the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
The participating artists have the opportunity to meet and make a dialectical exchange of artistic ideas and values and a direct contact with the audience. Artists from more than thirty countries already confirmed their attendance to the 10th Florence Biennale. It is still possible to join them by submitting the application to the Florence Biennale International Selection Committee, who will examine the portfolio and curriculum of each candidate.
From the forthcoming edition the Florence Biennale will welcome textile & fiber artists, jewellery artists, and ceramic artists that join other artistic categories already established in the past years: painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, installation, video art, digital art, mixed media, and performance.
