11TH FLORENCE BIENNALE

6 – 15 October, 2017 – Florence, Italy

Artists from more than thirty countries already confirmed their attendance to the forthcoming edition of the International Contemporary Art Biennial of Florence.

The Florence Biennale is the major contemporary art exhibition in Florence (Italy), where it is regarded as an outstanding showcase of the international contemporary art production. Every two years the Florence Biennale enlivens the Medicean city with a programme of collateral events such as conferences, displays, performances, workshops and lectures. All this with a view to offer artists and their audience the opportunity to engage with art and culture, and know more about the theme of each edition.

For 20 years the organization has worked on promoting the development of artists’ work by proposing a new way to view and/or understand Contemporary Art and offering to artists from all over the world an outstanding experience of cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary dialogue.

The Theme: eARTh – Creativity & Sustainability

The XI^th Florence Biennale aims at contributing to envision a future in which creativity and sustainability are inspiring principles of an artistic and cultural ‘ecosystem’ within a world that is respectful of nature and life forms on Earth. In this perspective cultural diversity and biodiversity do not exist in separate and parallel realms, but are part of a kind of co-evolutionary process that needs to be preserved and nurtured.

The “Lorenzo il Magnifico” International Award

During each edition an International Jury composed of distinguished scholars, art historians and critics from different countries confer the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Award to the best exhibiting artists for their works on show. The artists compete in a range of art categories, which, in the eleventh edition of the Florence Biennale, includes Drawing & Calligraphy, Painting, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Ceramic Art, Textile & Fiber Art, Jewellery Art, Photography, Digital Art, Video Art, Installation Art, and Performance Art.

Internationally renowned artists will be guests of honor, as happened in previous editions with David Hockey, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert & George, Marina Abramović, Anish Kapoor and Marta Minujín, who were awarded the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
