Dear Subscriber,
From October 18th to 22nd, members of the International Biennial Association (IBA) will all gather in Prishtina to celebrate biennials worldwide through our annual General Assembly, this year organized in collaboration and with the support of Manifesta. These global gatherings have, since their inception almost a decade ago, been moments of celebration as much as critical reflection on the role and possibilities offered by the biennial model.
After two years in which we had to rely on online events, we are finally comfortable our members may travel again to meet in person, and we are extremely happy to do so in Prishtina, which has seen its first biennial event happen this year with the staging of Manifesta 14. To celebrate this great event and to maintain the spirit that characterized the approach held in Kosovo by the so-called “European nomadic biennial”, we have decided to structure our 9th General Assembly around a key question:
How can a biennial be a model for education and community transformation?
Focusing on educational programs has been at the heart of many discussions we have had at IBA and, given the attention to this aspect shown in recent edition of Manifesta, we strongly believe this would be the perfect opportunity to dedicate our General Assembly’s public program to a variety of voices on this. We hope this will be an occasion for biennial makers across the world, especially those directly involved in education, outreach, and community engagement to share their insights and different approaches. A key part of biennials, education and outreach programs have allowed these events to become true knowledge production spaces, bringing together individuals of different age, gender and class to create dialogue on specific themes or pressing issues in a region. They have ranged from mental health support programs to inclusion hubs for communities often excluded from public and cultural life and, in many occasions, they have been the tool through which biennials could find ways to respond quickly to urgencies arising in the social and political landscape they inhabit.
Closely connected to many biennials’ educational strategies is the idea of having a long-term cultural and social impact on their territory. Especially through the work with children and young adults, educational programs have been conceived as a learning tool to reflect on the specific culture of a city in relation with those of the artists and works presented in the exhibition. This capacity for reflection is cultivated in many forms, be that through formal or non-formal education. Through social educational programmes developed with and for students, teachers and parents, biennials have the potential to influence the development of competencies such as creativity, collaboration and imaginative problem solving, to help develop resilience, nurture appreciation of cultural diversity and freedom of expression, and cultivate innovation and critical thinking skills.
Whether you choose to attend as a future member of IBA or as representative of your institution, we hope to see you in Prishtina. Those who intend to visit or are interested in receiving more information are requested to RSVP.
